Our Health Testing Standards
At DJ Critter Cove, the long-term health and well-being of our breeding animals and the puppies and kittens they produce is our highest priority. Every breeding animal undergoes age-appropriate health screening before being considered for our program. While no breeder can guarantee an animal will never develop a health condition, comprehensive health testing allows us to make informed breeding decisions that help reduce the risk of inherited disease and promote healthier future generations.
Devon Rex & Sphynx Cats

Our breeding cats undergo a comprehensive health evaluation that includes:
FeLV/FIV testing to ensure they are free of Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.
Comprehensive PCR infectious disease panel to screen for common contagious feline pathogens before breeding.
Genetic DNA testing through a reputable laboratory to identify inherited conditions and ensure responsible pairings.
HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) screening performed by a veterinary cardiologist through echocardiography at recommended intervals, as HCM is one of the most significant hereditary heart conditions affecting both Devon Rex and Sphynx cats.
Routine veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and ongoing monitoring of overall health and temperament.

Our French Bulldogs are health tested according to current breed recommendations to help produce healthy, structurally sound companions. Testing includes:
OFA Hip Evaluation
OFA Patellar (Knee) Evaluation
Cardiac examination performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist.
CAER (Companion Animal Eye Registry) eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist.
Genetic DNA panel for breed-specific inherited disorders.
Coat color and trait DNA panel to accurately identify inherited color genetics and avoid incompatible pairings.
Tracheal assessment when appropriate to evaluate airway health.
Spinal evaluation for hemivertebrae and other congenital spinal abnormalities when recommended.
BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) assessment, when available, to evaluate breathing function in this brachycephalic breed.
Routine veterinary care, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and continual assessment of structure, temperament, and overall health.
Health testing is an essential part of responsible breeding, but it is only one piece of the puzzle. We also carefully evaluate temperament, structure, pedigree, and overall wellness when selecting breeding animals, with the goal of producing healthy, well-socialized companions that exemplify the best qualities of their breed.
